Outreach Ministries: Weight Training Program
Weight training helps build muscle, burn calories, and melt away fat. Starting a weight-training program can offer people the chance to get in shape. Listed below are some things to consider when starting such a program.
- Where to Begin: First, you should establish goals for your program. Do you plan to set up a gym with equipment for members to use at their leisure, or are you planning on structured classes? It is highly recommended that your instructor be certified in weight training, as improper lifting technique can cause serious injury. Certification programs are available through your local junior college and online.
- Equipment: Weight training programs can be done with free weights or with weight machines. Free weights are less expensive than weight machines and are more easily adapted to smaller and larger body types. However, machines are safer than most free weights because the weight is more controlled. With multiple purpose machines, several individuals can exercise simultaneously on the same piece of equipment within a small space. If you use free weights, select a set of bar bells or dumbbells and a weight bench for the upper extremities and bar bells for the lower extremities.
- Safety: It is extremely important that all participants get checked out by a doctor before participating, particularly those who are over thirty. The training floor should be skid resistant and free of clutter. If possible, install a water fountain in one corner of the room or supply a cooler. At least one staff member should always be on duty during operating hours to act as a spotter and safety supervisor.
- Expense: A weight training program is going to cost considerably more to implement than an aerobics or yoga class, simply because it uses more equipment. However, don’t let the initial cost discourage you from trying. Contact local sporting goods stores and see if they will sell you equipment at a discount. Ask church members if they have any exercise equipment at home gathering dust. Check online auction houses for deals on used items. Hold fundraisers to raise donations.
