Outreach Ministries: Senior Outreach ProgramsSenior citizens are an important part of any community. In today’s youth focused media, they are often overlooked. Give back to the elderly through programs such as these: Weekly Meals:Host a senior night each week where people can come enjoy a hot meal and socialize with their peers. Prepare nutritious meals that are senior friendly. Keep dietary restrictions such as lactose intolerance and diabetes in mind. Play some classic music from the 30’s and 40’s. Use tablecloths, and real silverware. You might even supply a small dance floor for the more sprightly seniors. This transforms it from a hand out to a night out on the town! Inbound Visits:This is for seniors who cannot leave their home, or are residents of an assisted living facility. They can often feel forgotten by the world. Schedule weekly visits by volunteers. They can play card games, read books, watch movies, or just sit and talk. Make care packages that include things like books on tape, large print cross word puzzles, and music CD’s. Oftentimes, just looking forward to a volunteer’s visit is enough to put a smile on someone’s face. Wellness Activities:Sponsor senior art or music classes. Offer yoga, swimming, and other movement therapies. Offer classes in low cholesterol, lactose intolerance, and diabetes friendly cooking. Work with your local hospitals to coordinate regular health screenings and tests. Host a special seminar that addresses the many health issues facing the elderly population today. Social Outings:Arrange for a monthly group outing for more active senior citizens. Some possible destinations include:
Make sure you have a variety of outdoor and indoor activates. All activates should offer options for less mobile individuals.
